The Boston Marathon isn’t just a race — it’s a benchmark of endurance, resilience, and preparation. From the quiet start in Hopkinton to the deafening cheers on Boylston Street, Boston’s 26.2-mile course is a test of strength, strategy, and heart.
For many runners, toeing the line in Boston represents years of dedication — and the experience of racing one of the most historic events in the world is unlike anything else.
Boston’s unique course profile demands more than mileage — it requires strategy. The early downhill miles can tempt runners into going out too fast, while the long climb through Newton tests every ounce of pacing and discipline.
The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) provides official training plans for different experience levels, which are an excellent foundation for structured preparation. However, most runners benefit from a plan that adapts to their unique needs — balancing life, work, and recovery while addressing specific strengths and weaknesses.
That’s where personalized coaching comes in.
Through Wild Dog Athletics Marathon Coaching, Abby Heffern — a 12× ultramarathoner, strength coach, and experienced remote running coach — helps runners complement the B.A.A. framework with individualized programming that fits real life.
